Silverthorne received its name from Judge Marshal Silverthorn, who staked his gold mining claim in the valley in 1881. The "e" was added to the name in the 1930’s because it was considered fashionable and chic. Over 100 years later Silverthorne continues to be "the gateway to Summit County." Officially incorporated in the 1960's, Silverthorne has grown up with the Summit County tourist industry.
